Dental Sedation

Dental Sedation, or Sleep Dentistry, includes IV Sedation which is used with many patients who feel nervous or anxious about their dental treatments. Dr. Steven Oltean, a licensed Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon, is certified by the State of Illinois to administer IV (intravenous) sedation, nitrous oxide sedation, and/or local anesthesia to his patients during their dental treatment. Dr. Oltean has received extensive anesthesia training in a hospital setting and has performed hundreds of sedations.

Rest assured, depending on the depth of the sedation and anesthetic being used, you are well monitored. These vary from the use of an automatic blood pressure cuff, to the use of a finger monitor, pulse oximeter, that helps monitor how well you are breathing for the entire procedure. The doctor also uses an EKG to measure your pulse and heart rhythm.

A patient’s anxiety and comfort can be optimized during their treatment. Here is a brief description of the various types of sedation that are used:

IV (Intraveneous) Sedation

IV (Intravenous) Sedation: IV sedation involves receiving a sedative agent to assist inducing sleep. The sedative is administered through the IV and after all monitors are placed, our patients fall asleep. This form of anesthesia provides the most comfortable option for your procedure.

Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous oxide (a.k.a. Happy Gas, Laughing Gas): Nitrous oxide sedation is an option at Northern Lakes Oral Surgery and Dental Implant Center. It is considered the intermediate form of sedation used in this office. Although you are relaxed, the doctor will be able to communicate with you during the procedure.

Local Anesthesia

Local Anesthesia (a.k.a. Novacaine) is used to “numb” the area being treated. Dr. Oltean may decide to use this form of anesthesia by itself or in conjunction with either IV sedation or Nitrous oxide anesthesia.

Dr. Oltean will be happy to discuss all sedation options with you in order to make your experience as comfortable as possible.
